Sidharth Malhotra On ‘Misson Majnu’: ‘The Film Will Represent A New Version Of Myself’

Sidharth Malhotra has mixed emotions when he thinks back on the last ten years. He is both satisfied and hungry for more. From being a rank outsider who won Student of the Year (2012) to being one of today’s most successful performers, it’s been a steady ascent full of learning and discovery. “When I first began out, I was very frightened and anxious. I learned everything on the job, including what measures to follow and how to enhance my performance or film selection. I also learned that intention is everything. “If you stay true to the genre and give your all in terms of screenplay and acting, [it produces results],” says the actor.

If the last decade saw him finding his feet, the next few years will be about constructing “the 2.0 version”. Mission Majnu on Netflix is the first step in that direction. “Hopefully, Mission Majnu will usher in a new version of myself as a spy. After Shershaah [2021], I want to receive the same love and fulfilment for the [espionage] thriller.”

Set against the backdrop of the 1971 India-Pakistan conflict, Shantanu Bagchi’s film stars Malhotra as an R&AW agent who goes undercover in the neighbouring country to learn about their nuclear weapons plant. The story, inspired by historical events but delivered via fictional characters, immediately struck a chord with the actor. “After portraying Captain Vikram Batra, this is my attempt to play a hero who can never come out and declare what he has done for the country. It will inform the audience about the folks who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep us safe. The Spy [2019] by Sacha Baron Cohen and Munich [2005] by Steven Spielberg, both based on true stories, sounded similar to our picture. This is not a gun-toting spy in the style of James Bond. “He had to strive — sometimes claiming to be a tailor, sometimes pretending to be a plumber — to gain that critical piece of information,” the actor explains.
