EXO’s Baekhyun, Xiumin & Chen Demand Contract Termination Over Mistreatment & Unfair Terms
EXO members Baekhyun, Xiumin, and Chen have expressed their desire to terminate their contracts with SM Entertainment, their agency. They have cited mistreatment and unfair contract terms as the reasons for their decision.
Allegations
The band members have accused SM Entertainment of overdue payments and offering them unreasonable deals, including contract extensions of up to 17 years. They claim that despite their debut in 2012, the agency has not adequately supported their career.
Artist’s Rights and Lawsuit
According to their lawyer, Lee Jae-Hak, the artists have the right to demand clear proof of payment, which SM Entertainment has failed to provide. The artists have requested payment data but have resorted to filing a lawsuit to terminate their contracts after the company’s refusal to comply. The lawyer also highlighted that SM Entertainment offered the artists contracts lasting 12 to 13 years, which exceed the government-recommended 7-year contract duration.
Alleged “Slave Contracts”
The artists feel that SM Entertainment is exploiting its superior position by imposing contracts that last nearly 20 years, including training periods, resembling what they refer to as “slave contracts.” They believe this is an unjust exercise of power by the agency.
SM Entertainment’s Response
SM Entertainment has responded to the allegations by stating that “some outside forces” are encouraging the artists to violate the terms of their contracts, suggesting illegal acts. The agency has expressed its intent to take legal action against these forces.
Recent Developments
This controversy arises shortly after SM Entertainment announced that EXO would release a new studio album later in 2023.
