Katrina Kaif Did Not Attend Met Gala 2026 Here Is What She Was Actually Doing

The rumour spread fast. The truth is simpler, sweeter, and a whole lot more Mumbai than New York.

Katrina Kaif did not go to the Met Gala. She was not there. There was no debut, no gown, no grand entrance up those famous steps. The whole thing was a rumour that took off because someone somewhere posted something without verifying it, and then the usual crowd of reposters did what they always do, which is share first and think never.

She was in Mumbai. With Vicky. With their baby.

That’s where she was. That’s what she was doing. And honestly, good for her.

Let me rewind a little because some context helps here. The Met Gala happened on the night of May 4 in New York, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, like it does every year on the first Monday of May. This year’s theme was Costume Art, and the dress code was Fashion Is Art, which basically meant celebrities were supposed to treat their outfits like actual artwork rather than just showing up in something expensive and calling it a night. Around 450 people attended. Big names, designer looks, the whole circus. It’s the kind of event where you either go and get photographed a thousand times or you don’t go, and someone makes up a story saying you did.

Katrina fell into the second category.

Her name is not on any confirmed guest list from that evening. No photo of her on that carpet exists. No legitimate publication reported her being there. What actually happened is that the day before the Gala, she and Vicky Kaushal were spotted at Mumbai airport together. It was one of the first times they’d been seen out in public properly since their son Vihaan was born. She was wearing an all-black outfit, a big coat, loose trousers, chunky sneakers, and sunglasses. Looked relaxed. Looked like a new mum who’d finally stepped outside and was taking it easy. Not exactly Met Gala behaviour, if you know what I mean.

So where did this rumour even come from?

Best guess is that people got swept up in how big the Indian presence at this year’s Gala actually was. And look, it was genuinely big. Karan Johar walked the carpet for the first time ever, in this incredible, dramatic cape by Manish Malhotra that had people losing their minds. Isha Ambani showed up in a gold saree with an actual diamond blouse, not fake diamonds, real ones. Natasha Poonawalla was there, Alia Bhatt, and Deepika Padukone were in the mix. Lots of familiar Indian faces, lots of coverage, lots of excitement. And somewhere in all that noise, Katrina’s name got thrown into the conversation, and nobody stopped to ask whether it actually belonged there.

It didn’t.

But here’s the thing that actually gets me about this whole situation. Even setting the rumour aside, there’s this assumption baked into the way people reacted, which is that Katrina not being at the Met Gala is somehow a gap in her resume. Like she’s missing out. Like she should have been there. And I just don’t think that’s right at all.

The woman just had a baby. Her son Vihaan’s name reveal alone broke the internet for about three days straight. Her beauty brand Kay Beauty has been quietly doing very well, built around actually good products for Indian skin tones, sold through Nykaa, and growing without her needing to be at every global fashion event to remind people it exists. She hasn’t had a film out since Merry Christmas in early 2024, and her relevance hasn’t dropped one bit. That’s not an accident. That’s someone who knows how to hold attention without chasing it.

She doesn’t need to walk every red carpet to matter. Some people have figured that out, and some people haven’t, and the ones who haven’t are usually the ones spreading rumours about who was or wasn’t at the Met Gala.

The actual Gala had plenty to talk about on its own, by the way. Beyoncé turned up for the first time in ten years. Madonna arrived wearing something that can only be described as a pirate ship on her head. Blue Ivy walked the carpet with her parents. Karan Johar made India very proud in his Manish Malhotra moment. It was a full, dramatic, photo-heavy evening, and it didn’t need Katrina Kaif to be great.

She was in Mumbai. Wearing black. At the airport. With her husband and somewhere close by, a new baby named Vihaan.

That’s not a lesser story. That’s just a different one.
