When Bharti Singh Confessed Wanting To Eat Apple From Dustbin Out Of Hunger & Poverty: “Yahan Tak Meri Soch Gayi Hai”
Comedian Bharti Singh, known for her remarkable achievements in the industry, recently opened up about her challenging upbringing. Despite her current success, her journey to the top was anything but easy. In a candid interview, Bharti revealed that she hails from a very poor background, where her family struggled to make ends meet.
Her Mother’s Work and the Struggle for Food
Bharti disclosed that her mother worked as a house help, and their daily sustenance relied on the leftovers brought home from their employer’s house. The family survived on meager earnings and had to make do with whatever food they could manage to find. In a particularly heartbreaking revelation, Bharti shared that she had never even eaten a whole apple in her entire life.
The Desperation for Food and Eating from the Dustbin
In a conversation with Neena Gupta for Brut, Bharti candidly shared her darkest moments. She revealed that during times of extreme hunger, she even contemplated picking up discarded food from the dustbin to satisfy her appetite. She expressed her struggle and desperation, explaining that her impoverished background had pushed her to such lengths. Bharti emphasized that many comedians come from similar impoverished backgrounds, as comedy often stems from pain and hardship.
Festivals and Depressing Celebrations
Bharti also shared the challenges her family faced during festivals. While others would rejoice, her family would sink into depression due to their dire circumstances. Bharti recalled dramatizing festival celebrations to escape their reality. On Diwali, when her mother would bring home sweets from her work as a maid, they would perform a puja (worship) ceremony, but otherwise, they would sit idle. Bharti would join other children in the neighborhood, clapping and pretending to participate in the festivities by watching them burst firecrackers.
Observing the Mistreatment of Her Mother
Reflecting on her mother’s experiences as a house help, Bharti revealed that she witnessed people treating her mother disrespectfully. However, their misfortunes and sadness momentarily faded when they received leftovers from affluent households. Bharti explained that while her mother worked, she would stay seated, cleaning toilets and waiting for leftovers. When the leftover vegetables were returned, they would become fresh food for Bharti’s family, bringing a sense of joy and completion to their day.
