“TRUTH HIDDEN FOR 32 YEARS” Anupam Kher’s Emotional ‘Kashmir Files’ Speech

While there have been several Bollywood films about the Kashmir conflict, Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files was the first to be a commercial and critical success. This film is also notable for being the first Oscar winner to address the Kashmir conflict.

Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Darshan Kumar, and Pallavi Joshi starred in the film, which told the story of the genocide and exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley. The film’s narration served as the film’s own narration.

The film was recently screened in the Indian Panorama section of India’s International Film Festival (IFFI).

Anupam Kher and the film’s producer, Abhishek Agarwal, both attended the 53rd Goa Film Festival this year. Abhishek Agarwal graciously accepted the award on behalf of the entire film’s production team.

Anupam Kher’s speech, in which he praised Vivek Agnihotri for bringing attention to a subject that had been ignored for decades, moved attendees to tears. To paraphrase what he said: “Seeing the film always evokes strong emotions in me, and it holds a special place in my heart. The film’s true nature remained hidden for 32 years, despite the fact that it depicted the mass murder of several thousand people in a single day, a truth that we have been trying to expose for quite some time. In this account, Hindus and Pandits in Kashmir have been the targets of violence and persecution. Despite the popularity of the story, only Vivek Agnihotri considered making it into a film.”

The actor shared a video from the event on his Twitter account. Go here to find out more:

Despite widespread criticism upon its initial release, The Kashmir Files became one of the year’s highest-grossing films. This was due in part to the fact that it was based on a true event, which is an unusual occurrence in the world of cinema.

Many people considered nominating the film alongside RRR for an Academy Award.

Finally, Chhello Show was chosen to represent India at the Oscars.
