Despite considering Aamir Khan and Ranveer Singh, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra found the perfect fit for the role in Farhan Akhtar after a brief 20-minute conversation with the actor. Mehra mentioned that Farhan immediately connected with the character during their discussion, and the intensity in his eyes reminded the director of Milkha Singh himself. This led Mehra to envision Farhan effortlessly playing the role of a rustic Sikh from a village, which eventually influenced his decision.

Mehra acknowledged that some people questioned his choice of casting Farhan Akhtar, citing labels and clichés associated with the actor. However, the director emphasized that an actor’s ability to identify with the character is what matters the most. He drew a parallel by mentioning how Sunil Dutt portrayed different characters with ease, including the rustic Birju in “Mother India,” despite being known for his suave image.
