NTR Jr. Recalls How SS Rajamouli ‘Tortured’ Him And Ram Charan For Naatu Naatu, Stating, ‘I Asked Him Why He Was Doing This’
NTR Jr. and SS Rajamouli attended a special screening and reception for their film RRR, which became a global sensation after its release last year, at the Directors Guild of America Theatre. As the audience chanted “Bravo for best film!” the actor-director duo took the stage. They discussed various aspects of the film, and NTR Jr. expressed surprise that the iconic animal scene played out the way it did on screen. SS Rajamouli mentioned during the conversation that he had not expected such an international response. The actor and director praised each other, with NTR Jr describing the acclaimed director as a “guiding soul” and stating that he would never be satisfied with 99.9%; he wants “110%.”
“Komuram Bheemudo is the best film I’ve ever directed,” Rajamouli told NTR Jr. during the discussion. It’s my favourite scene in any of my movies. Because NTR is such an accomplished actor. He can perform with one of his small brows if the camera is focused solely on that brow. He’s that talented.”
“The best shot for me is when Bheem jumps out with the animals,” NTR Jr. said of the scene in which Bheem jumps out with the animals. I was never told how to take the shot, how to jump out with all these animals, or how he would fire. I didn’t see it until the movie came out, and I was blown away.
SS Rajamouli talked about his “synchrony” with NTR Jr. We’ve worked together on four films and are extremely well-matched. “We’ve done Naatu Naatu together,” Jr NTR interjected.
Jr. NTR called Naatu Naatu the “cherry on top,” recalling how SS Rajamouli pushed him and Ram Charan to achieve perfection. “We shot it on the last day of shooting. We were tormented for 65 nights. SS Rajamouli wanted us to despise each other, so we were fighting, killing each other, and then apologising to each other. We stopped apologising by the 21st or 22nd night and declared, “Let’s get this done.” Then he pulls out his bazooka, Naatu Naatu. “We’ve done complicated things before, but Rajamouli’s emphasis in Naatu Naatu was on synchronisation, not complexity.”
He went on to say that very few songs have an introduction, middle, and end. When two friends are too smitten with one another, there is no need for them to look at each other. You can predict what they will do. It is about the friendship of two people. This man would torture us from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and we’d go to bed at 11:30 p.m. and wake up at 5:30 a.m. This happened after seven days of rehearsals. I asked him, “Jesus, why are you doing this?” He was so obsessed with synchronisation, watching the monitor to see if the legs and hands were in sync. I never understood why he was so concerned with synchronisation.” When Jr NTR saw the reactions to the song’s promotional video and discovered that everyone praised the synchronisation, he said Rajamouli “shocked” him. Naatu Naatu is a Golden Globe nominee for Best Original Song.
