Renowned Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui shares his experience of being scolded by director Anurag Kashyap during the shooting of the film Gangs of Wasseypur. Despite his impressive performances, Siddiqui faced criticism from Kashyap, leading to a sleepless night.
Background
Gangs of Wasseypur, released in 2012, marked a significant milestone in Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s acting career. The actor reveals that after securing the role, he began imitating Hollywood legends Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.
Anurag Kashyap’s Reaction
During an interview with Mashable India, Siddiqui shares that during the three to four months of his imitation phase, his teacher advised him against it. On the first day of the Gangs of Wasseypur shoot, Siddiqui admits, “I went like Al Pacino, even speaking like him.”
However, director Anurag Kashyap was dissatisfied with Siddiqui’s performance and scolded him for copying Al Pacino. Siddiqui recalls, “Anurag scolded me a lot at night. He told me, ‘You’re behaving too much like Al Pacino.'” This criticism had a profound impact on Siddiqui, causing him to discard the imitation overnight and struggle to sleep.
A Lesson Learned
Reflecting on the incident, Siddiqui realized that he cannot merely “play” a powerful character but must channel his own energy to authentically portray the role. Anurag Kashyap advised Siddiqui that he didn’t need to exert power, as having 25 people behind him already made him look dangerous. This realization helped Siddiqui redefine his approach to acting.
