Multiple Cinemas In Mumbai Have CANCELLED Midnight And Early Morning Showings Of Avatar: The Way Of Water due To A Lack Of Audience Or ‘Low Ticket Sales.
The highly anticipated film Avatar: The Way Of Water will be released tomorrow, on Friday, December 16. It is anticipated to be one of the biggest openings of the year and the second-biggest opening for a Hollywood film in India, based on ticket sales. Additionally, the initial reviews have been favourable. However, several multiplexes have been forced to reduce the number of screenings of the film due to a lack of ticket sales.
A trade source told Bollywood Hungama, “In an unprecedented move, Disney asked multiplexes in Mumbai and surrounding areas to play Avatar: The Way Of Water at midnight and even early in the morning at 3:00 a.m., 4:00 a.m., 5:00 a.m., and 6:00 a.m. beginning on the day of its release. Today, midnight screenings are commonplace. Films such as Sooryavanshi (2021), Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022), Brahmastra (2022), and, most recently, Drishyam 2 (2022) were also screened at odd hours. However, midnight and early morning screenings of these films began on the second day after word of mouth spread, resulting in a high demand. In the case of Avatar: The Way of Water, there was a great deal of confidence that the film would generate a great deal of buzz and that midnight showings around the world would be packed on the day of its release.
The source continued, “Unfortunately, this did not occur in the majority of theatres. In some theatres, not even a single ticket was purchased by moviegoers. With less than 12 hours remaining before these screenings, the management of these theatres decided to cancel them. Various theatres have sold tickets for these performances, and these will be kept. The decision as to whether these shows will be performed on Saturday and Sunday will be made later, based on the response and ticket sales for regular shows.”

An industry expert opined, “People are eager to see Avatar: The Way of Water, as evidenced by the high demand for advance tickets to regular showings. Before word-of-mouth spreads, however, moviegoers may not be prepared to watch a film at 12 a.m. or 3 a.m. Perhaps the high prices also played a role. Despite this, Avatar: The Way of Water is expected to have a massive opening.”
In the meantime, the midnight and early morning IMAX and 4DX showings of Avatar: The Way of Water have received a tremendous response and will be running at or near capacity.
