Ayushmann Khurrana: ‘Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui’ Flopped Because ‘India’s Homophobic’
Ayushmann Khurrana has starred in three consecutive critically and commercially flop films in the last year, beginning with Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui in 2021 and continuing with Anek and Doctor G this year.
Two of the three films received positive reviews from critics, but they all ended up looking the same. Despite the fact that the films are from different genres, they were able to achieve this.
In a recent interview to promote his upcoming film An Action Hero, Ayushmann addressed the issues that plagued his previous films.
Aayushmann blamed the failure of Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui on “unfortunately our country being homophobic.” Aayushmann made the following remark when asked about Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui.
Ayushmann referred to Anek as a docudrama and stated that it was created for a specific audience, while praising Doctor G’s success despite its high rating.
As he stated to the media, “When I first started out in filmmaking, I concentrated on films about taboo subjects. There should be community viewing and a wider film, so I’m guessing these are the types of shows the kids have been watching. Because of the unfortunate homophobia that exists in our country, my last three films have bombed at the box office. The setting for the LGBTQ-centric film Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is Chandigarh, India. The docudrama “Anek” took a different approach, aiming for a more specific audience. It should come as no surprise that the film Doctor G performed well at the box office, given its A rating. For a while, that was the extent of my filmmaking training.
After a string of successes, he was asked if his films’ flops had affected him “I consider myself to be resistant to change. If I don’t occasionally push myself outside of my comfort zone, I’ll become stale and uninteresting. I am the one who makes these outlandish choices, and I have never been one to conform. I intend to continue taking them regardless of how well they work for me in the future. The beauty of film budgets is that they allow me to continue pushing the boundaries, which is what I do. My films typically have budgets ranging from $0 to $500,000, so I’m not concerned about losing money and can take creative risks.
His next project will be to play Jaideep Ahlawat in an action film.
Anirudh Iyer’s An Action Hero is set to be released on December 2, 2022.
