Around 70 Theatres In Tamil Nadu Will Not screen Avatar: The Way Of Water Because Disney Demands A 70% Revenue Split; Exhibitors Are Hopeful That A Solution Can Be Reached.
A source from the exhibition industry told Bollywood Hungama, “The studio is demanding a 70% percentage share from exhibitors, which is unprecedented for a Hollywood film. Some theatres were able to negotiate it down to 65 percent. We proposed sharing 60% of the revenue. Disney insists on 70%, however. That is ineffective for us. It is not feasible in the real world.”
The source continued, “In Tamil Nadu, approximately 300 theatres are screening Avatar: The Way of Water and have agreed to these terms.” However, approximately 70 theatres are unwilling to concede. Nearly 20% of theatres will not release Avatar: The Way of Water, despite their eagerness to show it.
Not only single- and double-screen theatres, but also multiplexes have been subjected to these terms and have agreed to them. This created difficulties for the seventy theatres. The studio argued, “If 300 theatres have already agreed to the terms, why can’t the remaining theatres do the same?”
“Many theatres are on standby in the hopes that Disney will relent and that they will be able to release Avatar: The Way of Water.” Therefore, no other films are being shown this morning. If the issue is not resolved by the afternoon, they will be forced to play older releases.”
Interestingly, Avatar: The Way of Water ticket sales are significantly higher in the South than in the rest of the country. The source concluded by saying, “The studio has imposed these restrictions only in Tamil Nadu, where the film’s popularity is astronomical. For this film, several theatres upgraded their screens to 2K resolution. Unfortunately, they may not be able to screen it.”
