Aamir Khan Calls Swades “Boring,” Never Watched the Film
While promoting Sitaare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan reveals he rejected Swades for being "boring" — sparking a fresh debate among fans and film buffs.

It’s not every day that a Bollywood superstar casually dismisses one of Indian cinema’s most loved films, but Aamir Khan, currently promoting his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, has done just that. While speaking to Zoom, Khan shared that he turned down Ashutosh Gowariker’s Swades during the early 2000s, saying he found the narration dull — so much so, he never even watched the finished film.
“I told Ashutosh it didn’t work for me. I found it boring,” Khan said in the interview. “I haven’t seen the film till date, but people liked Shah Rukh in it, so I guess he made it better.”
From Lagaan to Swades: A Shift in Artistic Vision
The timing of this revelation has raised eyebrows. Back in 2001, Khan had just delivered Lagaan, also with Gowariker — a film that would go on to be nominated for an Academy Award. Riding high on success, Khan was one of the few actors who could turn down a prestige project and walk away with little consequence.
As Khan tells it, Gowariker approached him with a script then titled Kaveri Amma. Aamir reportedly sat through a detailed, three-hour narration but couldn’t connect. He felt the story needed tighter writing and a stronger grip on the emotional arc. So, he stepped back.
The role was eventually offered to Hrithik Roshan and R. Madhavan, before landing in the hands of Shah Rukh Khan, who reportedly teared up listening to the script.
Swades: A Film That Grew Over Time
Swades, released in December 2004, wasn’t a massive hit at first. But what it lacked in box office buzz, it made up for in emotional resonance.
The film follows Mohan Bhargava, an NRI working at NASA, who returns to India to find his childhood caretaker and rediscovers his roots. Directed by Gowariker and scored by A.R. Rahman, the film didn’t rely on melodrama or gimmicks. It moved at its own pace — slow, thoughtful, and grounded in real India.
With time, Swades became a cult classic. It earned two Filmfare Awards, including Best Actor for Shah Rukh and Best Background Score. It remains one of SRK’s most restrained and beloved performances.
Public Reaction: Honest or Insensitive?
The timing of Aamir’s comments has led to intense discussion online. While some appreciated his honesty, many fans and cinephiles felt the remark lacked grace — especially coming from a senior actor speaking about a peer’s critically acclaimed work.
“Glad he rejected it,” wrote one fan on Reddit. “SRK brought soul to Mohan Bhargava. Aamir would’ve brought technique — but not heart.”
A blog post from Koimoi even thanked Aamir for passing on Swades, saying, “Thank you for not liking it. Because in that space, SRK gave us something unforgettable.”
Others questioned why a self-proclaimed cinephile wouldn’t take time to watch such an important film by a former collaborator. That, they felt, was less about opinion and more about attitude.
Patterns in Aamir’s Public Commentary
This isn’t the first time Aamir Khan has made bold remarks about past projects — including ones he didn’t act in. He previously claimed he warned the makers of Thugs of Hindostan that the film might flop, even before its release. He also mentioned that the failure of Laal Singh Chaddha “broke his heart,” but distanced himself from the film’s creative decisions.
These remarks, while seemingly candid, have led some to believe that Khan uses interviews to reposition himself — taking credit when things go right and stepping away when they don’t.
Meanwhile, Aamir Returns With Sitaare Zameen Par
Aamir is now gearing up for Sitaare Zameen Par, scheduled for theatrical release on June 20. The film is a sports drama inspired by the Spanish hit Champions, and features Aamir as a coach training children with disabilities.
He has doubled down on his belief in theatrical releases. Speaking to The Times of India, he said, “I believe in my audience. We are releasing in cinemas because the magic of that space cannot be recreated at home.”
This marks Aamir’s return to the big screen after a long hiatus, and expectations are understandably high.
What This Moment Reveals
This isn’t just about one actor not liking a film. Aamir Khan’s remarks have opened up a wider discussion about how stars influence projects — not just through the roles they take, but also through the ones they pass on.
It also brings up a subtler point: the importance of watching and acknowledging peer work. In an industry built on collaboration, celebrating others’ achievements, even if you weren’t part of them, matters.
Shah Rukh Khan’s Swades may have started slow, but today it stands tall — not as a crowd-puller, but as a soul-stirrer. And maybe that’s the kind of film that doesn’t always land in the first narration.voice may step away, but the echo of shared stories always finds its way back.
