Paul McCartney Joins Late John Lennon On “The Final Beatles Song” Using AI Technology
Sir Paul McCartney, the surviving member of the legendary rock’n’roll group The Beatles, has announced that he will reunite with the late John Lennon on what is being referred to as “the final Beatles song.” This unique collaboration has been made possible through the use of artificial intelligence (AI). The AI technology was employed to extract Lennon’s vocals from an old demo, allowing McCartney to incorporate them into the song. The news of this remarkable musical endeavor was shared by McCartney during an interview on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Today’ show.
Extracting Lennon’s Vocals with AI
McCartney, who is 80 years old, expressed his excitement about the upcoming release, stating that the song has already been completed and will be made available to the public later this year. Although the title of the song has not been disclosed by McCartney, reports suggest that it might be called ‘Now and Then.’ Lennon, the creative force behind the composition, originally handed the demo tape labeled “For Paul” to his widow, Yoko Ono, in 1994.
The track in question had been considered for release as part of The Beatles’ ‘Anthology’ project, which comprised a documentary, a three-volume set of double albums, and a book chronicling the band’s history. However, the final selection for release from the tape was ‘Real Love’ and ‘Free as a Bird.’ While iconic Beatles producer George Martin declined to produce the former track, Jeff Lynne of the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) was brought on board as a co-producer for the latter.
AI’s Role in Music Production
The use of AI in music production is not entirely new. In Peter Jackson’s 2021 three-part Beatles documentary ‘Get Back,’ a similar technique was employed to enhance the audio quality of archival recordings.
