Anthony Hopkins Reflects On His MCU Stint As Odin: “Pointless Acting” With Limited Scope
Renowned actor Anthony Hopkins, known for his versatile performances in Hollywood, recently expressed regret about his involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In an interview, Hopkins discussed his role as Odin, the ruler of Asgard and father of Thor, in the Thor franchise.
The actor, who appeared in Thor in 2011 and was later killed off in Thor: Ragnarok in 2017, voiced dissatisfaction with the limited substance of his character and the nature of his acting experience within the MCU.
Limited Scope and Displeasure
Hopkins, a two-time Academy Award winner, felt that his contributions to the MCU films were minimal and lacked substantial depth. He expressed disappointment with the portrayal of his Odin character in the Thor franchise, as he believed his performance was reduced to wearing armor and having a beard.
According to a report by the New Yorker, Hopkins stated, “Sit on the throne, shout a bit. If you’re sitting in front of a green screen, it’s pointless acting it.” These remarks indicate his dissatisfaction with the lack of meaningful character development and the reliance on visual effects in his MCU appearances.
Not the Only Critic
Hopkins is not the first, nor will he be the last, prominent figure to criticize the superhero genre and the MCU in particular. Other renowned personalities, including James Cameron and Martin Scorsese, have also expressed their reservations about superhero movies.
Scorsese famously remarked that he does not consider them true cinema, comparing them to theme park experiences rather than the emotionally and psychologically driven narratives that he associates with cinema.
Anthony Hopkins’ comments shed light on his personal dissatisfaction with his portrayal of Odin in the Thor franchise within the MCU. As an accomplished actor with immense talent, Hopkins expected a more substantial and fulfilling acting experience.
