Despite a lower-than-expected opening weekend, Avatar: The Way of Water is proving to be a huge box office success. The James Cameron film had made $955 million by the second Monday, indicating that it will cross the billion dollar mark by the end of Tuesday, according to Deadline. If that happens, Avatar: The Way of Water will surpass Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ box office total of $955 million, making it the year’s third-highest-grossing film after Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion. Notably, Top Gun: Maverick took 31 days to reach the $1 billion mark, while Jurassic World Dominion took more than four months. With a production budget of around $350-460 million, the film needs to gross another billion dollars to break even.

Avatar: The Way of Water, directed by James Cameron, was released 13 years after the original film in 2009. The sequel follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) as they try to protect their children from the Skypeople’s return and Colonel Quaritch’s (Steven Lang) vengeance. The film also introduces the Metkayina, a new Na’vi water tribe.
