‘Black Adam Will Not Be In Their First Chapter Of Storytelling,’ Dwayne Johnson Says Of His Future With DC.
Los Angeles, California: Hollywood star Dwayne Johnson says that after talking with DC Studios co-chief James Gunn, his anti-hero Black Adam “will not be in their first chapter of storytelling”. But Johnson added a statement posted to social media that DC and his production company, Seven Bucks, “have agreed to continue exploring the most valuable ways Black Adam can be utilised in future DC multiverse chapters”, reports ‘Variety’.
“Love the Rock, and I’m always excited to see what he and Seven Bucks do next,” Gunn responded. I can’t wait to work with you soon.” The announcement is the latest in a series of headlines that have followed Gunn’s appointment as head of DC Studios alongside producer Peter Safran, as the two men reshape the future of Warner Bros.’ slate of DC-based films, TV shows, and games.
Gunn and Safran have untangled the DC Universe from the cast of characters that have been established over the last decade, beginning with Gal Gadot’s ‘Wonder Woman’ and Henry Cavill’s ‘Superman,’ both of whom have appeared in multiple films.
Cavill most recently appeared as Superman in a post-credits cameo in ‘Black Adam,’ which foreshadowed the actor’s announcement that he was “back as Superman” a day before Gunn and Safran officially took over DC.
On December 14, Cavill confirmed that he would not be returning as Krypton’s last son, as news broke that Gunn was working on a new Superman film. Johnson, on the other hand, has only recently made his DC debut with ‘Black Adam,’ which debuted in theatres in October to underwhelming box office returns, casting doubt on a sequel within weeks of its release.
To date, the film has grossed $391 million worldwide (on a $195 million budget plus marketing), and studio insiders have told ‘Variety’ that ‘Black Adam’ will most likely lose money, a claim Johnson has refuted on Twitter. Johnson’s statement includes effusive praise for Gunn, noting they’ve known each other “for years” and “have always rooted for each other to succeed”.
This comes just a day after Gunn addressed the “disrespectful outcry” from some DC fans over his creative choices for Cavill and Gadot. “When we took this gig, we were aware there would be a period of turbulence, and we knew we would sometimes have to make difficult and not-so-obvious choices, especially in the wake of the fractious nature of what came before us,” Gunn wrote.
“Our choices for the DCU are based upon what we believe is best for the story and best for the DC characters who have been around for nearly 85 years. These decisions may or may not be great, but they are made with sincere hearts and integrity, and always with the story in mind.”
