Time Machine, Shantaram, Dus: 7 Shelved Blockbusters.
Every year, a large number of films are greenlit, but only a small percentage of them are released in theatres.
These films include some of the most promising projects that were shelved due to unforeseen circumstances, and they frequently include newcomers and lesser-known actors as well as some of the biggest stars.
Consider these seven films that were either officially announced or the subject of rumours but were ultimately cancelled, leaving fans to speculate on what might have happened if they had been released.
1. Dus
Mukul Anand’s directorial has received a lot of attention, with 35% to 40% of the film shot prior to his untimely and unfortunate death. Later on, however, a handful of film songs were released, including the number one hit “Suno Gaur Se Duniya Waalon.” Movie music was used here.
Rahul Dev’s first major film role was supposed to be in Dus, starring Sanjay Dutt, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon, and Shilpa Shetty. Rahul Dev, despite being born in 1974, did not make his film debut until Sunny Deol’s Champion in 2000.
Mukul Anand’s brother, Raahul S. Anand, recently gave an interview in which he revealed that Mukul Anand shot the climax of Dus, which impressed Ramesh Sippy.
Interestingly, Imran Khan also played Pakistan’s Prime Minister in the film.
2. Time Machine
Aamir Khan, Raveena Tandon, Gulshan Grover, Naseeruddin Shah, Rekha, Amrish Puri, and Vijay Anand starred in Time Machine as time travellers. Shekhar Kapur directed the film.
The story follows Aamir Khan’s character as he borrows a time machine from Vijay Anand’s scientist character in order to find his real-life parents, Naseeruddin Shah and Rekha.
When the production company ran into financial difficulties, the film was 80% finished.
There were several memorable scenes in the film, including one in which Aamir’s character travels back in time and meets Amitabh Bachchan while waiting for a bus.
He believes you have the potential to become a famous actor someday. Amitabh is taken aback by the fact that he is still struggling and has no idea what lies ahead. As a result, Aamir introduces him to two aspiring authors, Salim Khan and Javed (Akhtar). So he tells the man, “Sir, you go meet them,” and the man goes. Amitabh is then given Zanjeer (1973), proving that “it will get done.”
3. Devaa
Subhash Ghai’s previous films, Hero and Karma, were huge commercial successes, so he cast Amitabh Bachchan opposite Liliput as the main antagonist in his upcoming film, Devaa.
Other actresses who appeared in the film included Shammi Kapoor and Meenakshi Sheshadri.
Despite the fact that Ghai had already shot some action scenes as well as a song with Bachchan and Kapoor, the film was cancelled after only two weeks.
According to reports, Amitabh Bachchan and Subhash Ghai split up due to their numerous creative differences and inability to adapt to each other’s working styles.
4. Raju Raja Ram
The Raju Raja Ram film was originally intended to be a comedy, with David Dhawan directing and a cast that included Jackie Shroff, Govinda, Salman Khan, and Manisha Koirala.
Jackie, the film’s producer, stated in a 1998 interview with Cineblitz, “The film has been facing rough weather because of dates.” Govinda and Salman, both giants, have been apprehended. If everything goes as planned, I will only be working on the film with Salman. I’ll start filming in November of this year and finish in August of the following year.
Actually, Salman offered me dates, but I was too preoccupied with Grahan to accept them. Nonetheless, he promised to come over and finish my work whenever I needed him between the hours of 7-8 p.m.
Unfortunately, the movie was never released in theatres.
5. Talisman
Talisman was supposed to be directed by Ram Madhvani (of Neerja and Arya fame), who also wrote the script for the Indian epic Chandrakanta.
The teaser, which featured Amitabh Bachchan in a supernatural disguise, was posted online for about a minute and a half before being removed when the film was eventually cancelled.
In a recent interview, the director, Ram Madhvani, stated that he has no plans to revive the film at this time.
6. Shantaram
Shantaram, directed by Mira Nair and starring Amitabh Bachchan and Johnny Depp, was released in 2007.
For a variety of reasons, the gangster drama was cancelled after a few seasons.
The project has been given new life as a web series starring Charlie Hannum, thanks to Apple TV+.
7. Xtreme City
In 2011, there was speculation that Leonardo DiCaprio and Shah Rukh Khan would star in Martin Scorsese’s Xtreme City.
According to reports, Shah Rukh Khan will play a gangster and Leo will play a police officer in the film.
“It’s a different kind of film, one where both Indian and American protagonists are balanced human beings and the story treats them in their full complexity without either culture being diminished or taken for granted,” the film’s original screenwriter, Mushtaq Sheikh, told PTI.
However, there was little activity at that leading post, and Leo’s rep flatly denied that a film was in the works.
While this is correct, it begs the question of why Mushtaq Sheikh said the things he did in that interview. Unfortunately, I doubt we’ll ever find out what’s really going on in this alleged gangster drama.
